Aerial View of Madeira Bay

Funchal (Madeira), Portugal

Location: Europe

The port of Funchal is your entryway to lush Madeira Islandpart of an island chain that belongs to the Republic of Portugal. Madeira is located approximately 500 miles southwest of Portugal and 250 miles north of Spain's Canary Islands.

Described as a tropical Eden, Madeira's trade winds keep temperatures mild year round as the sweet scent of vanilla and frangipani linger in the air. The island was formed from a massive undersea volcano and its fertile volcanic soil yields an amazing abundance and diversity of fruits, vegetables and flora.

At Madeira's center is Mt. Pico Ruivo, which rises 6,100 feet above sea level. Deep ravines run the length of the island, creating a dramatically craggy coastline that ends in a sheer drop into the Atlantic. These deep waters have been known to attract sperm whales close to shore. So if you're lucky, you might even experience a sighting!

This diminutive island is only 35 miles long and 13 miles at its widest point. But it is big on scenery and certain to be a memorable part of your Disney Cruise Line vacation.
